New apartment rentersInsects play a very important role in the ecosystem, but only when they stay outside where they belong. How can you keep them outside and rid your apartment of the bugs that have already crept in? Chemical pesticides can be harmful to your and your pets, so try these natural, non-toxic alternatives instead.

  • Spiders: These creepy crawlies enter your apartment through cracks around doors and windows. Ask your complex's maintenance crew to fill in these small spaces with caulk to keep the arachnids out.

  • Ants: Lingering foods, dirty dishes and standing water attracts ants into your home. Keep them out by cleaning your home, especially your kitchen, often and lining potential entry points with cinnamon, which naturally repels ants.

  • Mosquitoes: Keep a powered on fan by open windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. They cannot land in a crosswind or fly against it.

  • Fruit flies: Even though they multiply rapidly, it's easy to catch and kill fruit flies. Place a piece of skinless fruit in a bowl and cover it with plastic wrap with a few toothpick-sized holes poked into it. The critters can crawl in for a snack, but cannot fly back out.

  • Cockroaches: Roaches are attracted to water, especially in dry climates. Pour a bit into a jar and add some soap to attract, catch and kill the critters.

  • Crickets: Drop a spoonful of molasses into a shallow bowl or lipped plate, top it off with water and set it down where crickets are entering your home. This will attract, catch and drown them.

  • Moths: They may be attracted to the light, but moths are repelled by the scent of lavender. Hang lavender (fresh or dried) in breathable bags near problem areas or soak cotton balls in lavender essential oil to ward off the moths.

  • Silverfish: Trap these carb lovers by placing a piece of bread or a few bits of cereal inside a jar, then wrap masking tape around the outside. Silverfish will crawl in, but cannot make it back up the smooth glass.
